Minor heart attack symptoms you must act on, immediately

Abhikriti Suyal

Everytime we hear the term heart attack, images of a person clutching his chest instantly pop into our heads. And, we are compelled to believe that the worst must have happened to that person but not all heart attacks are as life-threatening as we think. More importantly, heart attacks are generally classified based on the damage done to the heart and the portion of the heart muscle affected – major and minor heart attacks. Also, you might be surprised to know that minor heart attack symptoms greatly resemble a major heart attack.

Understanding a minor heart attack

It is medically termed as non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Effecting a smaller portion of the heart muscle, minor heart attacks are not known to cause much permanent damage to the heart. How does this happen? A blockage in the coronary artery occurs in a small artery, which is known to supply blood to a small portion of the heart muscle. This does not block the flow of blood to the heart completely and just lasts briefly. It is important to understand that despite being termed as ‘minor’, this form of heart attack is still a big deal.

Understanding a major heart attack

ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), popularly known as a major heart attack is a more severe form of a heart attack. It happens when a large artery is blocked. This large artery supplies a large portion of the heart; and completely blocks blood flow to the heart. A major heart attack happens when a large portion of the heart muscle is affected. Thus, causing a significant amount of damage to the heart.

A major heart attack can result in cardiac arrest (when your heart stops beating), collapse, instant death or permanent heart damage. Unfortunately, a major heart attack can also lead to irregular heart beat, heart failure, and an increased risk of a second heart attack.

Symptoms of heart attack

Minor heart attack symptoms and major heart attack symptoms are nearly the same, which include:

  • Chest pain lasting longer than 10 minutes
  • Pain that spreads either to the arm, neck, or jaw
  • Breathlessness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting
